Weekend in the Loire Valley
The Loire Valley, the central part in the middle stretch of the Loire river with a spanning of 280 kilometres located in central France and since 2000 part of the UNESCO World Hertigage Sites is one of my favourite parts in France. See here my previous travel diary.
Les Hautes Roches
I was so happy to come back and like every time we had to stay in one of the few Relais&Châteaux Houses in this area. This time we choose the pretty Les Hautes Roches, with a stunning view onto the Loire river. The rooms are build into the stone wall, which you can have a look at in the pictures below. Also the location is pretty good, in a very peaceful and quite area even though the main route is close by you don't hear anything. Well, except chipping birds at sunrise. The hotel restaurant has one Michelin star and the food and wine are what you can expect of any Relais&Châteaux House. The service was also very good and very friendly. The only downside was our breakfast experience. You only get one basket with a few french pastries and bread, one small fruit bowl with natural yoghurt, orange juice, coffee and some jam and honey pots on the table for 20,- euros per person is quite overpriced in my opinion. And it is not even home made bread and pastries which I had to discover at our early departure on Sunday. One point which can be easily improved, other than that we had a great experience in the Les Hautes Roches! Also try the Vauvin, a local wine well-known for its characteristic fruitiness, fresh, crisp flavour.
Now lets continue with our visit to the Chateaux Villandry which is especially known for its beautiful gardens. The weather was perfect so we spend all morning strolling around the castle and had time to admire the beautiful garden. I suggest to visit in the morning or around lunch time as I noticed that it was much more crowded as we left at around 2 pm. If you have some time to spend bring a blanket and some drinks, the garden has a beautiful area to relax and let the day go by. I would have loved to have a little picknick there beside the water, it is such a beautiful place. But have a look yourself...
I don't want to give away too much of the beautiful castle,
so here just a little glimps inside ...
