If you plan to visit Mexico on the Carribean Sea side, definitly go to Playa del Carmen. It's not so fully packed with tourist like Cancun. And you are closer to a lot of attractions, like the Maya Ruins in Tulum, the Grand Cenotes and you also have a huge Adventure Park on this coast line. We stayed at a Melia Hotel with a private beach, all-inclusive package and a beautiful room with access to the Garden.
One day we booked a private Tour Guide, which was really worth it because we hadn't had to wait in any ticket lines and he showed us whatever we wanted to see. He drove us to the Grand Cenotes, where we had a dip into the water and he even drove us to one of the local food markets to try out some regional products and we had the chance to buy some Mexican honey, spices and fruits.
We also spent one evening in the Adventure Park Xplor. The Fuego Activities by night are great, we had so much fun!

It was not adviced to stay outside the Hotel Resort on your own, what made us felt a bit cowed. But you can book a private tour guide or any other guided tours and it's fine. You do not have to worry about too much. I never had a bad feeling or was afraid. Also because it's more tourism here and the security measures are higher. Don't forget to pack a moskito spray!
The Mayan History and culture is incredible and very interesting. Even if your not into history that much, I'm sure you will like it. And of course the mexican food is so yummy!
